Blantyre buzzed with energy, color, and rhythm over the long weekend as Illusionz Club brought its signature nightlife experience to Malawi’s commercial capital. Amidst the thrill, speculation swirled about a permanent Illusionz opening in Blantyre.

Our entertainment writer caught up with Martin Nyirenda—the visionary behind the brand—and he clarifies that what the city experienced was not a new launch, but a bold installment of their annual “Illusionz Pop-Up” series.

For four electrifying days—from Friday to Monday—Blantyre was transported. The pop-up venue, at the old People’s head office in Ginnery Corner, was transformed into a nightlife haven mirroring the high-end ambiance of Illusionz Lilongwe. Temporary though the structures may have been, they were nothing short of spectacular.

“It was just our usual Illusionz Pop-Up. It’s the usual yearly event. We do not have immediate plans of opening a new place in Blantyre—at least not yet,” said Nyirenda in an exclusive interview.

The mission, Nyirenda explained, was straightforward: “To let Blantyre people have a feel of the Illusionz experience.”

From top-tier stage design to dazzling light setups and curated musical lineups, the Pop-Up was meticulously organized to emulate the essence of the original Lilongwe club.

The turnout reflected that ambition. According to Nyirenda, over 500 people attended on Friday, more than 1,500 packed the venue on Saturday, and by Monday, numbers were still strong with an estimated 800–900 revelers dancing into the night.

Social media lit up with praise. “That set-up was something out of a movie,” wrote one attendee on Instagram. Another added on Facebook, “If this is just a pop-up, then Blantyre deserves a permanent Illusionz!” And many Blantyre revelers thought as such too.

Though the Blantyre Pop-Up felt like the inauguration of something new, Nyirenda emphasized that permanent roots require more than temporary brilliance.

“All the structures on that set were temporary. If we are to establish a place in Blantyre, it will be something with the real Illusionz touch and experience. It will be another massive place like what we have in Lilongwe,” he pointed out.

That said, the overwhelming support and turn up might have nudged plans forward. Nyirenda admits: “the turnout has compelled us to speed up our plans” for a permanent venue in Blantyre. “We might come earlier than planned,” he hinted.

The Bigger Picture: A Lifestyle Brand in Motion

Illusionz isn’t just about nightlife—it’s about building an experience. Beyond the bars and DJs, Nyirenda envisions Pop-Ups in Mzuzu, Zomba, and eventually crossing the border into Chipata, Zambia.

“The first Pop-Up outside of Malawi will certainly be in Chipata, Zambia. That is where we have a good clientele visiting our Lilongwe club, booking for birthday parties and other activities,” said Nyirenda.

Commenting on the different life-styles of Blantyre and Lilongwe, with the capital city well known for its free-spending spirit, Nyirenda observed: “The audience in Blantyre is no different from that of Lilongwe. From Friday to Monday, Blantyre came out in huge numbers.”

He added: “The good thing is that in every area there is always money for entertainment. To have good patronage, it is not about the location, but rather about what you are doing and offering.

“Again, entertainment is an industry that caters for all situations. When you are sad or happy—you need it.”

Currently, the club is also ramping up anticipation for its 2025 Illusionz Beach Festival, described by Nyirenda as “massive” with tickets already selling fast.

In terms of artist development, Illusionz has taken a measured approach. While the club has featured weekly performances by local acts like Zeze, Nyirenda stressed that their core focus remains the bar and restaurant business, with collaborations with artists built on aligned visions.

Here to Stay

When asked about the sustainability of Illusionz’s momentum, Nyirenda was resolute: “We are here to stay. Business is about being consistent and responsive to what people want. We travel in other countries, we observe what others are doing, we innovate.”

The message is clear: Illusionz is not chasing trends; it’s building a brand—and Blantyre, with its roaring turnout and warm embrace, may well be next in line to get the full experience.

And as Nyirenda put it with genuine appreciation: “Big thank you to Blantyre. You came out. You trusted us big time. We were happy and we believe you were also happy throughout the four days.”

Nyirenda also thanked companies which came forward to support this year’s Illusionz Pop-Up series which include Standard Bank, Captain Tours, The Fort, Cassim Car Hire, Study West Education Services and Utande Internet Services Malawi.
